Mind-Blowing Cat Trivia Facts: Test Your Feline Knowledge

Mr. Stubbs, Mayor of Talkeetna

Let’s face it — cats have been with us for a long time. In fact, a gravesite containing a cat and a human has been found in Cyprus dated to 9,500 years ago. Though the cat has remained much the same through the ages, humans have given the animal a role ranging from being considered a god in ancient Egypt to working hand in paw with the devil in the Middle Ages in Europe.

In modern times, for 20 years an orange Manx cat named Stubbs served as mayor of the unincorporated community of Talkeetna in Alaska. Since his death, this position now is held by two cats, Aurora and Denali. These cats help their community to foster tourist trade. Their political views apparently suited the population. In fact, in ancient Rome, cats were the symbols of liberty. The Romans had a saying about cats: “Liberty without labor.”

A Cat Has Some Amazing Physical Features

Your cat’s physical makeup is pretty darn amazing. For example, the feline body contains more than 500 muscles and over 200 bones. There are approximately 23 bones just in the tail. Those ears can rotate up to 180 degrees. This ability is possible because the cat has 32 ear muscles. If a great jump is required, they can jump up to six times their body length. And, yes, cats, too, can sweat, but it’s through their paws.

Besides their excellent night vision, cats can feel their way when it’s dark through their whiskers and sensory hairs on the sides of the legs and head. Because they traditionally used their hunting skills for survival, their distance vision is excellent, though up-close things can be blurry.

Cats, Camels, And Giraffes Share A Common Trait

Another interesting fact about cat vision: Kitty has three eyelids. Their third eyelid is called the palpebra trtia, or nictitating membrane. This third eyelid keeps the lens surface of the cat’s eye clear and moist.

As to the way they walk, cats, camels, and giraffes have something in common. They move the front paw and back paw on the same side of the body together in perfect unison; then move the paws on the other side. Those three creatures are the only ones with this way of moving.

Speed Champions

Are you an admirer of Olympic champion Usain Bolt, whose speed record is 27.3 mph? Your cat can beat that record, being able to reach a speed of up to 30 mph. Perhaps kitty can produce such remarkable bursts of energy because he spends up to 70% of his time sleeping.

Don’t Share Your Glass Of Milk

Images showing why cats should not drink milk

We have all read stories about cats lapping up a bowl of cream. Not a good idea to offer your cat any milk, as most cats are lactose-intolerant. Not only that, but they do not have taste buds for sweets, as we do. If they like eating something sweet, such as ice cream, it’s more due to the fat content than the sweet flavor.

At the other end of the scale, my research tells me that a cat can drink seawater. Now, that would be a valuable trait to be able to duplicate.

If you have a female kitten and don’t want her to reproduce, you’d best think about having her spayed early in her life. At just four months old she can reach reproductive maturity. Once your cat has kittens, she often communicates to them with meows, though she does not use that sound to “talk” to adult cats. It’s only reserved for kittens and humans — I wonder what that means? Does she think of us as some over-sized baby that she has to try to raise?

Unraveling the Mysterious Cat Behaviors

When it comes to understanding your cat, communication is key. Even in the animal world, cats have their own secret language, and we would do well to try to learn what they try to tell us. Flicking tails, slow blinks, and even ear positions send signals about their mood or intention. Observing these subtle cues helps in responding appropriately, nurturing trust and understanding.

Purring is often associated with contentment, but it can also indicate other states like stress or pain. A cat’s purr can have a calming effect, but it’s the context that truly reveals its meaning. Listening and watching closely is crucial in interpreting these vocal cues accurately.

Some believe cats have a sixth sense, often associating them with superstition and folklore. While there’s no scientific proof of supernatural abilities, cats are incredibly tuned to their environment, using their heightened senses to detect changes, making them appear otherworldly at times. An example: A cat can sense an earthquake before it happens.

Astonishing Cat Facts That Will Surprise You

From impressive physical capabilities to puzzling mysteries, these animals never cease to amaze.

Having a cat around can be beneficial for your health. Studies suggest that petting a cat can lower stress levels and reduce the risk of heart attack. Cats offer companionship that goes beyond just being cute; their presence can positively impact overall well-being.

Cats hold records that are truly astonishing. The longest-living domestic cat lived an impressive 38 years, well beyond the average lifespan. There are also accounts of the heaviest cat tipping the scales at over 20 kg, though it’s essential to keep your feline friend at a healthy weight. That kitty needs to go on a diet!

A cat brain is more complex than a dog brain. In fact, cat and human brains are similar. Did you know that a cat has both a long-term and short-term memory? Also, cats are social learners and have the ability to imitate humans. Could that be the origin of the term “copy-cat”?

It’s Clear That Having A Cat Can Enrich Your Life

Observing your cat and trying to understand and interpret those strange cat behaviors can add a bit of drama and enrichment to your life. Your cat can provide surprises that entertain and enhance your daily existence. I can vouch for the fact that there’s never a dull moment at my house if my kitty’s on the loose!
