Have You Witnessed These Funny Cat Behaviors?

Your cat can do the strangest things. They make no sense to us, but be assured they have their reasons. How many of these funny cat behaviors have you witnessed?

For example, has your cat started purring at unexpected times? My Mocha has surprised me at times. He hates being brushed, but yet he will purr while attacking your hand at the same time. Does he perhaps protest too much? I used a harness for a time to take him out for walks. He resisted during the entire time I put the contraption on him, but he also purred loudly. Go figure!

Does your cat like to curl up in the sink? I can see a good reason — if the day is hot, it’s a good method to cool off — and it fits those kitty contours so well. In like fashion, my cats have always liked my banjo case when I remove the instrument. It’s almost as if it were made for a curling cat.

Your Feline Has Many Attention-Getting Aids

Is your cat good at providing distraction when you are trying to work? Mocha loves to walk on my computer keyboard. More than once, he’s tried to type in the password with his paws, but he always gets it wrong. If I’m writing, my cat has been known to try to steal my pencil. If you are reading a book, kitty might sit on your reading material — anything to gain attention if they feel they need it.

A Loving Lick

Your kitty might show a bit of affection by licking you — your hand; your nose; your face. It’s another way to tell you that you are special.

Does your cat try to groom you? Uptight Cat loved to groom a guy’s beard. He groomed one friend’s beard by jumping up to the top of the refrigerator, where he could reach the fellow’s face. The cat would work on that beard for as long as our friend would stand there. He groomed another man’s beard when the fellow laid on the floor. Then the cat could sit on his chest and do the job enthusiastically.

Drinking Drama

Cats like to drink from running water; hence, a cat fountain is often popular. In Kodiak, when I hiked with Carlos, he always stopped at the river to have a fresh drink. Mocha loves his water fountain, but sometimes he likes variety. The bathtub has a slow leak. Mocha will sit there and catch the drip as it descends.

Clean water is quite important. On Spruce Island, I had a caretaker who lived at my place and made sure the dog and cats were fed and fussed over when I was gone. I’d always given my cats water upstairs in the loft bedroom, while I gave the dog his water in the kitchen. The caretaker decided to furnish one big water container for all the animals, so he cut the bottom off a 5-gallon bucket and made a dandy water dish. The animals all used it. but fastidious Sam Cat did not want to drink from a bowl containing dog slobber. So, he’d take a paw and scrape it across the surface of the water first and then drink.

Face-rubbing and head bunting are both means to mark you with their scent glands. Kneading can sometimes serve the same purpose, as cats have scent glands in their paws as well.

Well-Aimed Aggression

Some of the funniest things I’ve witnessed have to do with my cat exhibiting aggressive behavior. Once, when I had to take my cats to a motel room for the night, Loose Cat escaped and ran down the long sidewalk in front of the motel units, me in hot pursuit. He came to the corner. Just out of sight around that corner a German shepherd napped in the sun. When the cat caught sight of that large dog, he shot up in the air a good three feet, and when he came down, he was three sizes larger than when he went up. The dog did not wait for the cat to touch down but had run halfway across the yard by the time the cat returned to earth.

Carlos once unexpectedly joined me in battle. A couple of small dogs had come onto the property. The cat was outside, and I worried that two dogs to one cat gave the dogs an unfair advantage. Thus, I chased the dogs with my walking stick, shouting “Go home!” One dog ran off to the neighbor’s house, and I chased the other all the way around my house. At the far side, the cat came out of the woods and joined me. Side by side, we walked toward the little dog, me shouting “Go home” and the cat yelling in his loudest voice what was undoubtedly the cat equivalent of that order.

The dog was amazed. He’d never been chased by a person and a cat before, so he stopped and stared at us. “This isn’t working,” I muttered to myself. So, I said, “Carlos, go get him!” The cat took off like an arrow from a bow, running toward the dog. When he reached the dog, that animal finally realized he was in mortal danger, so he turned around and ran for home, never looking back.

Bring On The Food!

Can your cat put on a convincing act that he’s near starvation? There’s some Oscar material here. I’ve had more than one cat work at convincing me he hasn’t actually eaten for days, so where’s the food?

Does your cat try to bury his food if he doesn’t want it all? The floor just doesn’t scrape up very well. It’s instinct kicking in, telling kitty to hide leftovers from any nearby predators who might steal it.

What about demanding food between meals? Cats do well on several small meals a day, and your kitty will be sure to let you know that a snack would be nice. I’ve taken to giving Mocha a “short portion” when I feed him, because then I let him out into the wide, wicked world. If I call him to come home, he’ll consider it and show up if he decides it’s a good choice. However, if I call and shake his container of dry food, he will come every time, sometimes from quite a distance away. I always give him a little food when he comes in. He finds this arrangement quite satisfactory.

Hilarious Playtime Antics You’ll Love

Of course, cats and boxes provide lots of giggles for you…especially when kitty tries to fit in a box that just isn’t roomy enough. Or, if he has a special box with an opening he can fit through and a dark interior, he loves it. It’s a place to become invisible or to nap in warmth and solitude. It feels like a safe place and the closeness gives him comfort.

Does your cat have trouble making decisions? Does he change his mind a lot? I had a little picture of a cat at the door, with a caption that said something like: “A cat is a creature who wants out when he’s in, in when he’s out, and sometimes both simultaneously. How true that one can be!

What is it about a laser pointer that’s so intriguing? My cat will spend hours chasing that red dot from one end of the house to the other. When Carlos and I lived in Kodiak, we shared a trailer that had a very long hallway. Running the full length of that hallway and back after that elusive light was such a good game! I had a Kodiak friend who was often visited by a fox looking for free food. He discovered that the fox, too, liked the laser pointer light and would chase it back and forth, ever the optimist that he’d catch it.

Contortions And High Places

Cats often do their best to fit in a space that is obviously too small for them. Sam Cat, my Spruce Island cat, would try to contort himself into a small round cake pan, simply because there was catnip in there and he wanted to roll in it in the worst way. Or, they love to climb to the highest point in the house where they can oversee the world. If I can’t locate Mocha, I might discover him on top of the freezer or the kitchen cabinets. He also has a “penthouse” in the bathroom — a high storage space under the eaves where he can retreat from the world if he needs alone time.

Sure, I Have A Bed, But I Prefer Yours

If I’m napping and get up while the cat sleeps on, I discover he wasn’t really sound asleep. As soon as I move, the cat takes over the spot where I was just resting. First, it’s well-warmed, and second, it smells like me. These factors make it the ideal spot to nap.

Ya Gotta Love ‘Em

Kitty will keep you guessing — and giggling. Cat behavior can be so comical to us, but to the cat it makes such sense. These humorous differences simply underscore our differences and add to the reasons we have to love them.
