Cat doctor

Well, I blew it this time! On Thursday March 20 at 1:00 in the afternoon I got up from my desk to go turn off the gas under my rice, as the timer just went off. When crossing the room, I tripped over a chair leg and fell face down onto my cement floor. I’m … Read more

March 19, 2025 by Fran Kelso
Cat on table: "I prefer the term 'obedience-challenged.'"

Every cat has its own personality, and understanding this is the first step in addressing a cat’s stubbornness. Some cats are naturally more independent and may resist training simply because they’re not used to taking cues. Others might be reacting to stress or past negative experiences. Noticing patterns in behavior can give valuable insight into … Read more

Jaguarundi, dark grey color

Have you heard of this small cat — the jaguarundi? This wild cat doesn’t quite fit into any mold. Who says you can’t train a cat?

A FAMOUS CAT

Remember Walt Disney’s Aristocats from 1970?  A Parisian cat named Duchess was her model.  The cat gets abducted to French countryside.  After many adventures, she escapes with the help of an alley cat named O’Malley.

—Joan Moore, A Cat’s Companion

LEGEND OF THE PUSSYWILLOW

Have you ever heard this legend?  Once, some nasty person threw a bunch of kittens in the river to drown.  The mother cat became so agitated that the willow trees on the river bank felt sorry for her.  So, they trailed their branches in the water so the kittens could hang on, and thus saved the babies.  Since then, each spring the willow wears soft, grey buds that remind us of kittens.  We now call these trees “pussy willows.”
